Birmingham, Alabama: Smart Home

The first ABILITY House was build in 1999 in Birmingham, Alabama and welcomed more than 250 volunteers with disabilities. In a chance encounter at a gas station, Derrick Daniels who has quadraplegia met Chris Wright, the recipient of the first ABILITY House, and learned about the program and the accessible home Chris had received.

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Birmingham returned to us to see if we would partner with them on another build, and of course we were more than happy to return to the scene of where it all began!

After discussion with assistive technology experts, it was agreed upon that Derrick's new home would include various assistive technology features, that would not only enable him to have much greater independence, but to also be safe in his new home.
